About
I am currently on an M.Phil within the history faculty but also with input from the department of Economics, working on the relationship between British foreign and domestic policy and the British shipbuilding industry in the first half of the 20th century. More specifically, I am attempting to understand the relationship between the politicisation of yard workers, Admiralty concerns with regards to workforce retention in peacetime and the yard owners' political connections and thus what, if any, influence they managed to exert at a higher level upon the Cabinet to sustain or increase government spending in their sector, particularly on naval arms. In addition, the wider economic and political consequences of such actions are being examined, such as the potential for this to be a factor in the outbreak of certain armed conflicts. The M.Phil itself focusses more explicitly on the effect of re-armament on the industrial politics of the Clydeside years between 1931 and 39, tying into the broader spectrum of the Ph.D, which I've gained research council funding to undertake from September 2010.
