About

Research interests:

My main research interest included Kurdish history in general and Kurds during the late Ottoman period. I have worked extensively on Kurdish newspapers published during the Second Constitutional period (II. Meşrutiyet). I am also general interested in the modernisation process in the Ottoman Empire and state attempts to create an Ottoman official nationalism. I also have a keen interest in world history – especially the 19th and 20th century, in particular, the unification of Germany, British imperialism, World War One, World War Two and the modernisation of Japan.

Education:

I completed my undergraduate studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies-London (SOAS) with a joint honours B.A degree in Politics and History (2004). Between 2004 and 2005 I worked as an English teacher at Salahaddin University in Erbil-Iraq. I also worked as an editor on the Erbil based English language newspaper “Kurdish Globe.” In 2005 I returned to the United Kingdom to study on “Ethnicity and Nationalism” M.Sc program at the London School of Economic (LSE) graduating in 2006. Following this I studied as an external student at İstanbul Boğazici University History department. Between 2007 and 2009 I completed a M.A degree in History at İstanbul Bilgi University. I taught academic English in the History department at Bilgi University. I am currently at Oxford University Oriental Studies Department - working on my D.Phil.
