About
In November 2011, I completed my DPhil in Oriental Studies (Arabic) at the Oriental Institute and Balliol College, University of Oxford. Currently, I enjoy the benefits of a two-year Andrew W. Mellon Career Development Postdoctoral Fellowship in Arabic Scoiolinguistics, jointly held at the Oriental Institute and Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at the University of Oxford. The idea is to turn my doctoral thesis (Writing Practices in Contemporary Egypt - an ethnographic approach) into a monograph, publish a couple of articles, go to conferences, do some tutoring and teaching here in Oxford, and continue with my research that has primarily been focused on sociolinguistic aspects of the contemporary, dynamic and fluctuating developments of the written forms of Arabic.
So far, my geographic focus has been on Egypt, where I spent three and a half years (2008-2011) doing research for my doctoral degree. During that time, I also worked as an adjunct at the American University in Cairo (AUC), teaching some anthropology courses at the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Egyptology.
I have an MA in Anthropology from the AUC, and a BA in Oriental Philology (Arabic and Turkish) from the University of Belgrade.
Once upon a time, which now seems as if happening in some other life of mine, while working as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Belgrade, I used to make some additional income by working as a literary translator. Those efforts resulted in my translations from Turkish into Serbian of four novels of the Turkish Nobel Prize laureate Orhan Pamuk (see 'Books').
By mid-2013, I will be on the job market again, sending out my applications, so if at that time you happen to know of a vacancy I might be interested in (and suitable for), or you simply want to offer me a job, please feel free to get in touch. ;)
Cheers,
Ivan :)
