Thesis Title: Democracy as Development: How Does Democracy Cause Advances in Human Development?
David Rueda, Professor Comparative Politics, Merton College
Laurence Whitehead, Official Fellow Politics, Nuffield College
About
My areas of research specialization are democratization, human development, political economy, comparative politics and institutional design issues.
For the past three years, as the Ronaldo Falconer Scholar at St. Antony’s College, my research has concentrated on disentangling and explaining the interactions between human development and democracy. My research takes a multidisciplinary approach to explain how democracy’s three main attributes (electoral organization, institutional design and the collection of rights) cause advances (or not) in terms of human development (education, health and income). Methodologically, the research also uses a combination of research methods including large “N” statistical analysis with a paired-comparison of Costa Rica and El Salvador.
