About

James Edwards has been a research student at the University of Oxford since 2008. Previously, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in 2006, and the BCL at Oxford in 2007. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2009.

James's research focuses on the conceptual structure and normative standing of the criminal law, with particular reference to recent developments in English criminal law. His work argues that the changing nature of the criminal law is frequently objectionable when looked at through the lens of political philosophy. For example, it is increasingly unjust, and increasingly in tension with the virtue of legality.

James is currently writing about some of the demands of political legitimacy.
