About
Dr Javier Morales is a specialist in Russian foreign and security policy, with a particular focus on its perceptions of the West and relations with the EU, NATO and the United States.
He is a Senior Associate Member of St Antony's College, University of Oxford, where he is affiliated to the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre. His research is supported by a postdoctoral mobility grant (2010-12) from the Spanish Ministry of Education.
His academic career started at the Department of International Studies, Complutense University of Madrid, where he joined the UNISCI research group in 2002. He later became a Predoctoral Fellow (2004-08) funded by the Ministry of Education. After defending his dissertation, he moved to Carlos III University of Madrid for one year as a Postdoctoral Fellow (2009-10).
He holds a BA/MA in Political Science, a Diploma of Advanced Studies (MPhil) and a PhD in International Relations (cum laude) from Complutense University. He also obtained a MA in Peace, Security and Defence from the IUGM, a joint research institute of the Spanish Open University (UNED) and the Ministry of Defence.
He has been a short-term visiting researcher at the Barcelona Institute for International Studies (IBEI), the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), the Carnegie Moscow Center and the University of Birmingham. He is a member of the expert panel on security and defence at the Observatory of Spanish Foreign Policy (OPEX), Alternativas Foundation.
