National Finds Advisor for Medieval and Post-Medieval Coinage
About
I am the Portable Antiquities Scheme (www.finds.org.uk) National Finds Advisor for Medieval and Post-Medieval coinage, covering the period from c.AD 600-1800 and am based in the Heberden Coin Room at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
The focus of my research is the early medieval period, mainly the 6th-9th centuries, around the North Sea. My main interests include the archaeology of trade and economy, the circulation and use of coins, and the settlement archaeology (both urban and rural), especially the interactions between emporia and rural settlements. I am currently involved in the project 'The Origins of Wessex: Unearthing the Kingdom of the Gewisse' with Prof. Helena Hamerow and Dr Chris Ferguson (both Institute of Archaeology, University of Oxford), funded by the John Fell Fund, exploring the archaeology of the Upper Thames c.AD 400-850 with a focus on the growth of administrative and economic landscapes.
Alongside my research I am also a Committee Member of the Medieval Settlement Research Group.
