Thesis Title: Conservatives and the Politics of Art, From Red Scares to Culture Wars

About

I am a final year DPhil student in the Faculty of History, researching the origins of the culture wars and the rise of the modern American conservative movement through a case study of the National Endowment for the Arts.  I work at the intersections between history, politics, public policymaking, and art history.

I have a first class BA in Modern History from London Guildhall University and an MPhil in Historical Studies from the University of Cambridge.  Prior to coming to Oxford I worked in the fine arts world and in the museum sector, and also spent time in local government and lobbying in Westminster.  I am currently teaching at Queen Mary, University of London.

Abstract:  My thesis offers a new history of the recent American right: I utilise the case of the National Endowment for the Arts as a lens through which to explore most specifically, the origins of the culture wars, and more broadly speaking, the way that fundamental political characteristics of post-Second World War America have constricted political opportunities for the right, even in times of seeming great success and political opportunity.
