Thesis Title: Britsh Shipping and Trade in the Mediterranean in the Age of War, 1770-1815

Knick Harley

About

I am particularly interested in the Maritime Economic history of the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic era which has been the framework for doctoral thesis. Emphasis has been placed on the British reaction to the French economic warfare disproving the generic assumption that British trade and shipping was curtailed during the French Wars.

Within my research questions lie the business organization of shipping and trading firms in the late 18th century; the similarities and differences in business practices between local Mediterranean and international/atlantic carriers; the contraction of the monopolistic Levant Company and the emergence of free trade in the Mediterranean.

Currently, I am working on the transition of Greek financiers from Constantinople to the West, in the 19th century, and the establishment of the first Greek merchant bankers in the City of London.
