About
My research focuses on those groups and individuals who operated in the vibrant political space between organized Conservatism and Fascism in mid-twentieth century Britain. Examining the interaction between popular and political culture in groups such as the Society For Individual Freedom, the Monday Club, and the League of Empire Loyalists I trace their historical development not as individual organisations but as part of a constellation of activists that belonged to a 'Radical Tory' tradition. As such my research touches on issues that range from the understandings of the role of direct action in 1950s Britain to the part that popular literature played in the formation of conservative political attitudes.
I am also interested in: the methodology of 'political culture' research, debates within and about New Political History, innovation in British electoral campaigns, and, especially, the history of the Morris Minor.
