About

My current research examines the intersections between literature, cultural memory and geography, with particular emphasis on urban landscapes, town planning, historical monument and, in general, the modern and post-modern city.  I have also worked on Virginia Woolf's publishing ethics, and she remains a keen interest; other strong research interests include travel writing, life-writing, British and American Modernism, African-American literature, political literature of almost any kind, and print culture.

I am also a Contributing Editor - and was for a long time Senior Editor - of the Oxonian Review of Books.  I have taught extensively both for Oxford University and for other Oxford undergraduate programmes such as Stanford University's.  Subjects taught have ranged from Introduction to Literary Studies to postcolonial literature to modern American poetry; class sizes have ranged from mid-sized lectures to seminars to one-on-one.  I have also supervised Masters students from the Sorbonne through the Erasmus programme, and I am currently teaching an interdisciplinary arts course for the Open University.

Finally, on a perhaps less tedious note, I love travel (destination and means of transport irrelevant); singing, playing and listening to classical music - with a particular fondness for Renaissance choral works, Bach, Rach. and Bruchner; tearing through various news sources and cultural/political magazines; hiking and cycling; hitting as many theatre, museum and music events as possible; and heading home to Portland, Oregon for much-needed outdoor access and excellent local beer and wine.
