About

I'm University Lecturer in Twentieth-Century Literature at Oxford, and Tutorial Fellow at Merton College.  Within Oxford, I'm one of the convenors of the Literature and Science Seminar. I was one of the founders of the British Society for Literature and Science, and served both as its Secretary (2006-09) and Chair (2009-12); in 2012 I organized its 7th annual conference.  From 2008 to 2011 I was an editor of The Review of English Studies.

Current research projects are an edition of Virginia Woolf's Night and Day for the Cambridge Edition; and articles or a book on science, poetry, and intellectual specialization in the period 1919 to 1939, which will include chapters on Herbert Read, Michael Roberts, William Empson, and Hugh MacDiarmid.  When these projects are finished, I hope to pursue work on literature and space (begun in Locating Woolf, a collection of essays I co-edited), and on late modernist poetry in Britain.
