About

My doctoral thesis will examine how Marshall Islanders react to the scientific prediction of sea level rise, which threatens to render the entire country uninhabitable in the present century. It is based on 19 months in the Marshall Islands, including 7 months of ethnographic fieldwork on this topic in 2007 and 2009. I am currently analyzing my data and outlining my thesis.

Previously I lived in the Marshall Islands from 2003 to July 2004 as a volunteer English teacher in an isolated rural community. During this time I learned the local Marshallese language to proficiency. I wrote a full-length textbook, Practical Marshallese, for learning the native language of the Marshall Islands, using my undergraduate training in Linguistics.

In summer 2008 I conducted a preliminary project on Sami perceptions of climate change in northern Norway, as a visiting researcher under the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Tromsø. I plan to build on this research in the future.
