About

I am an image processing specialist with a strong interest for Humanities research. After obtaining a MSc in Mathematics (Grenoble, F) and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Bern, CH - 2005), I gained experience in medical image processing for computer assisted surgery (ARTORG, Bern, CH), and radiotherapy (CMIC, UCL, London, UK).
At the University of Oxford's e-Research Centre (Oxford, UK) since 2008, and in close collaboration with Classicists and Orientalists, I investigate how imaging technologies and ICT can support the reading of ancient documents.
My main field of scholarly enquiry is the study, understanding and modelling of expert knowledge in the Humanities and, in particular, of how interpretations of artefacts arise. The ultimate aim of such study is to inform the design and development of software systems that will support the experts throughout their task. Combining my scientific background with my interest in the Humanities and Social Sciences, I draw my methodologies from Sociology, Philosophy, Art History, the Computer Sciences, and the Cognitive Sciences.
