About

I was born in Hamilton, Ontario and raised in Sarnia, Ontario.  I received a Bachelor of Arts in History from The University of Western Ontario in 1998 and gained a Bachelor of Education in Senior History and English Literature from Nipissing University the following year.  After teaching History, Law and English at the Secondary School level for four years, I returned to academics gaining my Honours BA at the University of Guelph in 2004 and a Master of Arts in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2006. My dissertation concentrated on the complex causes and events of the 1990 Oka Crisis and its broader implications. Currently, I am studying for a Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Oxford, St. Antony's College.  I am a Captain with the 1st Hussars Armoured Reserve Regiment of the Canadian Forces, serving since 2001, including two years service with the British Army.  My academic interests focus on military history, Indigenous peoples/cultures and Canadiana.  My monograph, OKA: A Convergence of Cultures and the Canadian Forces, was recently published by the Canadian Defence Academy (CDA) Press. My current research is an investigation of the evolution of CF invlovement in six Aboriginal protests and "standoffs" between 1989 and 1995.  My non-academic and non-military life revolves around fishing, cooking, travel, the Detroit Red Wings, playing the guitar, writing poetry and songs, and most importantly, my extended family and wife Taleitha.
