With a novel photochemical technique which combines mass spectrometry and resonant infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy (R-IRMPD) I study the vibrational spectra of biologically relevant ions. Coupling their spectra, obtained in the OH, NH and CH stretch regions, with ab initio calculations allows the assignment of their preferred protonation sites and conformations.
