Thesis Title: The depiction of the widow in 19th and early 20th century German literature
About
I am currently examining representations of the widow in German literature. The majority of my material comes from the nineteenth century but I also spend some time looking at fiction from the twentieth century. My thesis examines works by male and female authors and forms part of the AHRC research funded project 'Representations of Women and Death in German Art, Literature and Media from 1500 to the present'.
I graduated with a BA (hons) in French and German from Exeter University (1st class). I then went to Sheffield for an MA in Germanic studies (with distinction). My masters thesis examined Hermann Hesse's affinities with existentialist thought.
Alongside writing my thesis I work part time at Herstmonceux International Study Centre where I teach a beginners German course.
